  5. Roubaix : from textile history to cultural revitalization

Roubaix is one of the largest cities in the Hauts-de-France region, often mentioned alongside Lille and Tourcoing.
Roubaix’s history, impressive architectural heritage and vibrant cultural life make it an exciting place to explore.

History of Roubaix

The first written mention of the town dates back to the 9th century. Throughout the Middle Ages, Roubaix remained a small rural town, gradually developing around its wool industry.

The industrial revolution

Roubaix experienced exceptional growth during theindustrial revolution of the 19th century. The town took advantage of its advantageous geographical location and its mastery of the wool industry to become a major player in thetextile industry. Factories mushroomed, chimneys smoking day and night. It was a time of great industrialists, colossal fortunes and considerable technological advances.

Industrial decline

The 20th century marked the beginning of the decline of the textile industry. Faced with international competition and technological change, Roubaix’s economy bore the brunt of deindustrialization. Many factories closed, leaving behind thousands of unemployed workers. The city went through a difficult period, with rising unemployment and growing social problems.

Economic conversion

However, Roubaix has demonstrated its resilience. From the 1980s onwards, the city began to reinvent itself, investing in the service sector and focusing on digital and cultural development. Disused industrial buildings were transformed into coworking spaces, arts centers and housing. The city’s economy began to diversify, with the emergence of sectors such as mail order, distribution, services and new technologies. Today, although Roubaix continues to struggle with certain socio-economic challenges, the city is resolutely forward-looking, constantly seeking to innovate and develop. With its rich heritage, dynamic culture and strong entrepreneurial spirit, Roubaix is a symbol of resilience and renewal.

Roubaix’s architectural heritage

La Condition Publique

Inaugurated in 1902 as a warehouse for the packaging and quality control of wool, the Condition Publique is now a major cultural center in Roubaix. This historic monument has been magnificently restored and converted into a space for the visual and performing arts. The building is a perfect example of early 20th century industrial architecture, with its iron and brick structure, and bears witness to Roubaix’s rich industrial history.

Private hotels

In parallel with Roubaix’s industrial boom, numerous private mansions were built at the end of the 19th century.
These mansions, often built by wealthy industrialists, are characterized by their eclectic architecture, blending neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles.

The Roussel factory

The Roussel factory, a former woolen mill, is another example of a successful conversion. The industrial building has been transformed into a residential, commercial and leisure complex, while preserving the factory’s original architecture.

Culture in Roubaix

La Piscine – Museum of Art and Industry

Without a doubt, the highlight of Roubaix’s cultural scene is the André Diligent Museum of Art and Industry, better known as“La Piscine“. This unique museum exhibits a rich collection of art in an exceptional historical setting, a former Art Deco swimming pool. Temporary exhibitions allow visitors to discover a variety of artists and artistic movements.
In addition to the La Piscine museum, La Manufacture des Flandres is another important institution dedicated to the history of the city’s textile industry. It is both a museum and a textile production workshop.

Festivals and cultural events

Roubaix is also renowned for its many festivals and cultural events. The Accordion Festival is an annual event that celebrates this emblematic instrument with concerts, workshops and demonstrations. La nuit des arts, meanwhile, is a special evening during which museums, galleries and artists’ studios open their doors to the public for exhibitions, performances and workshops. And, as every year, the famous Paris-Roubaix, one of the oldest cycling races, takes place.

Digital commitment

Roubaix is a city that looks to the future, and this is evident in its commitment to the development of the digital sector. The city has become a hotbed for startups and technology companies, with several incubators and coworking spaces.
